Which MLB team drafted Colin Kaepernick?
MLB draft: In 2009, the Chicago Cubs drafted Colin Kaepernick out of the University of Nevada in the 43rd round.
NFL Draft: In 2011, the San Francisco 49ers drafted Kaepernick in the second round with the 36th overall pick.
Details: Kaepernick was known to be a hard-throwing high school pitcher, with a fastball that topped 90 mph. However, he concentrated on football at the University of Nevada. Undeterred, the Chicago Cubs kept after Kaepernick in hopes of luring the athlete to spring training. Tall and skinny, Kaepernick didn’t appear to have the traditional NFL quarterback build, Theo Epstein and his crew gambled, drafting the Nevada quarterback in the 43rd round with pick No. 1,310. The Cubs only wanted Kaepernick to throw pitches in spring training, according to one NBC source and were willing to pay as much as $50,000 to see him on the mound. Even though the Cubs’ deal would have been in the football offseason, Kaepernick thought it was better to use the offseason to work with his receivers for the upcoming season instead of joining the Cubs for spring training.
