Which San Diego Padres owner was a Dallas Cowboys QB?
Though he became a Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback with the Cowboys, Aikman was not new to baseball. The New York Mets attempted to sign him out of high school. A dual threat as pitcher and shortstop, Aikman planned to enroll at the University of Oklahoma.
Before using a draft pick on a player who wouldn’t play baseball, the Mets contacted Aikman to see how much it would take to convince him to forgo his college football career and play baseball instead. He told them it would take a $200,000 signing bonus.
“They said, ‘$200,000? Darryl Strawberry is not even making that much money,’” Aikman told the New York Post years later. “And I said, ‘Well if you want me, that’s what it’s gonna take.’ And they said, ‘You have a nice football career at Oklahoma.’ ”
In 2009, Aikman threw out the first pitch at a Padres game to introduce himself to the home crowd.
