Which MLB team drafted John Lynch?
MLB Draft: In 1992, the Miami Marlins (then Florida Marlins) drafted John Lynch out of Stanford University in the second round.
NFL Draft: In 1993, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Lynch in the third round with the 82nd overall pick.
Details: A hard-throwing, right-handed pitcher, John Lynch achieved one footnote in baseball history before his two-year pro baseball career ended and he began his (likely) Hall of Fame football career. Drafted by the expansion Marlins, Lynch threw the first official pitch in Marlins history when his minor-league team in Erie (Pa.) took the field for action before the major-league squad. Consequently, Lynch is one of only 30 men in history to throw the first pitch for a baseball team. In two seasons of minor-league action, Lynch went 1-3 with 2.35 ERA.
As a defensive back for the Buccaneers, Lynch embodied the big-hitting style of Ronnie Lott, helping to lead Tampa to a Super Bowl title during his 15-year career that included nine Pro Bowl appearances with the Buccaneers and the Broncos. Lynch retired after the 2011 season and became general manager of the San Francisco 49ers on Jan. 30, 2017. Beginning in 2014, Lynch became a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame but is still waiting for the votes to get inducted.
