How the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans are permanently connected
In 1960, Dallas millionaire Lamar Hunt created both the American Football League and his own team, the Dallas Texans, after years of waiting for a chance to buy an NFL team. Even though the Texans won the 1962 AFL championship, Hunt decided that for the long-term interest of the organization it would be better to move the team to Kansas City and rename the team the Chiefs.
In 2002, the Houston Texans played their first season as an expansion team to fill the void left when the Oilers left town to become the Tennessee Titans. The name Texans was a way for the new team to connect to a successful past that began in Dallas with a different team in a rival league that moved to Kansas City to become a modern-day conference rival.
The Texans are in the AFC South and the Chiefs are in the AFC West.
