Which four Yankees played themselves in the film Pride of the Yankees?

The Oscar-winning film Pride of the Yankees starred Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig in the ballplayer’s life story and battle with a lethal disease.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a deadly nerve disease that is commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease due to the worldwide fame the first baseman had.

Cooper’s costars in the movie were Teresa Wright, who played the ballplayer’s wife, Eleanor, and Babe Ruth, playing himself. Ruth had such a starring role in the film that he was listed as the third star on the movie posters and playbills, trailing only Cooper and Wright, established movie stars.

Joining the Bambino in the film were catcher Bill Dickey, utilityman Bob Meusel, and infield Mark Koenig.

The quartet of Yankees weren’t the only players-turned-actors. In fact, one former Chicago Cubs player had a chance to hit a future President of the United States in the head in one movie.
