When did the Dallas Cowboys start playing on Thanksgiving?
One of the oldest traditions in NFL history is the having games on Thanksgiving Day.
Both the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions play every Thanksgiving. With the exception of two years, the Cowboys have played every holiday since 1966. That year they defeated Cleveland, 26.14.
The tradition goes back decades earlier, however, to 1934, when the Detroit Lions first played on Thanksgiving Day as a marketing ploy to build attendance. Even though the Lions lost to the Chicago Bears in that first Thanksgiving Day game, the Lions sold out the 26,000-seat stadium and even had to turn away fans. Since then, the Lions have played every Thanksgiving whether fans want to see them or not.
