The $300,000 coin flip Jerry Jones lost
As an oil man, Jerry Jones became a multimillionaire as a “wildcatter,” which is a risk-taking investor who invests on unproven oil fields. His winning ways ran out in 1989, when he lost a coin flip with H.R. “Bum” Bright over the final $300,000 of the negotiating price for the Dallas Cowboys.
Bright won the bet and the $300,000.
Years later, Bright bought a fake double-headed coin and sent it to Jones with a note that read: “You’ll never know.”
Jones can afford the loss. He paid $140 million for the Cowboys in 1989. In 2017, Forbes magazine ranked the Dallas Cowboys as the world’s highest-ranked team in value at $4 billion. Real Madrid was No. 2 on the list at $3.65 billion.
